The river Charente is a 381 kilometre river which runs through the south west of France, stretching from
its source in the quaint little village of Chéronnac, through the departments of Haute-Vienne, Charente, Vienne and
Charente-Maritime, finally flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at Rochefort. For many centuries the Charente was bustling with
commercial shipping vessels making their way both up and down the river, but those busy days are now long gone and instead
the length of this picturesque river now makes an idyllic holiday location for those looking to spend a week or two indulging
in fun outdoor activities, both in the water, on the water and on the river banks.
If splashing around is your cup of tea, the Charente river is a fabulous place to spend
a holiday, as there are countless wonderful water-based activities on offer here. Canoeing and kayaking are perhaps the most
popular of the water sports on offer along the river and many visitors to the area enjoy a paddle downstream! All necessary
equipment can be easily hired and the river is ideal and fully equipped for everyone from beginners to those with a little
more experience. For the energetic thrill-seekers out there windsurfing is also available on the river, as is rafting and
raft racing. It is also possible to swim and bathe in the clear warm water of the river, as well as take part in a little
fresh water fishing. If you`d like to float along the water and enjoy the views but with a little less chance of getting wet,
taking a river boat cruise could be an excellent option. A number of flat bottom barges (constructed according to centuries
old techniques) make daily cruises up and down the river and are a wonderfully relaxed way to enjoy the water.
Whilst a wealth of fabulous outdoor activities for visitors of all
ages, sporting abilities and interests are available along the course of the river Charente, the charming region of Poitou-Charentes
is undoubtedly one of the best places to indulge in some exciting adventure activities. With its spectacular scenery, field
upon field of sunflowers, pretty little villages and mouth-water local cuisine, Poitou-Charentes is the ideal region to not
only see some of the most spectacular French countryside especially if taking advantage of car rental Toulouse but
is also a great place to let off some steam by taking part in an array of different outdoors activities such as kayaking and
canoeing. For more information on car rental in Toulouse visit - http://www.erentals.co.uk/locationguides/cheap-car-hire-toulouse-airport-france-tls.html.
